Summer Reading and STEAM Buddies
Program Overview
Reading and STEAM Buddies Volunteers help children who have finished grades one through six to continue reading throughout the summer. The program runs during July and August and encourages reluctant readers to enjoy books by making reading fun through the use of board games, shared science based activities etc.
Time Commitment
- 1-1.5 hours twice a week
- Volunteering starts July 7 and finishes August 18 (6 weeks)
Qualifications
- Speak and write English well
- Experience and/or interested in working with children and literacy
- Able to work with children on a one-to-one basis as well as in a group environment
- Act as a good role model for children
- Be reliable, patient and trustworthy
- All volunteers ages 18 and over must provide a recent Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check
Responsibilities
- Attend an orientation session before starting
- Meet with children registered in the program at the library at a set time weekly
- Help children with their reading
- Participate in educational games and activities
- Provide positive feedback and encouragement
- Follow the Library’s Code of Conduct at all times
