Community Learning Alliance (CLA)

Feature Image Micro credentials Mohawk

COMMUNITY LEARNING ALLIANCE (CLA) in partnership with Mohawk College

When you participate in a computer program at Hamilton Public you can earn credits toward Mohawk College’s Fundamentals Certificate. HPL is now part of the Community Learning Alliance, which gives micro-credits for informal learning completed at local organizations.

What are micro-credentials?

Micro-credentials are short courses focused on skills sought by employers.

Who benefits from getting micro-credentials?

  • Job seekers

  • Skill Builders

  • Second Career Starters

  • Continuous Education Learners

Which HPL programs  count toward a micro-credit?

Currently, four HPL public computer training programs are part of CLA:

  • Basic Computer Skills 1

  • Basic Computer Skills 2

  • Basic Internet Skills 1

  • Basic Internet Skills 2

Where can I take these programs?

Many HPL branches offer these programs. Go to hpl.ca/micro-credential for the current list. Programs from November 2024 onwards are eligible for a micro-credit.

How do I let the HPL programmer know I am working on getting a micro-credential?

Just tell the HPL instructor while you’re in class. Staff will track your progress and attendance and inform Mohawk College.

If I attended all the programs, do I get a micro-credential?

You must attend all four programs to get a micro-credit.

Are there other requirements?

Yes. Participation in these programs earn credit towards Mohawk College’s Fundamentals certificate

To complete the certificate, you must fulfill three additional requirements:

  1. College 101

  1. Complete any other Mohawk College course (General Education)

  1. Complete 120 hours of community workshops (up to 40 hours may be CLA programs)

Are there other places where learners can gain CLA micro-credits?

Yes. These local organizations run CLA programs.

What other benefits do I get from getting a micro-credential? Can I still get credit even if I am not enrolled at Mohawk College?

Yes. When you complete all four CLA programs at HPL, you will receive a digital badge that you can put on your resume. The digital badge demonstrates to employers your commitment to learning. You will receive your digital badge within two weeks of completing all the programs.

How will I receive my micro-credential certificate?

The micro-credential certificate is sent via email.

Where can I learn more about Mohawk’s micro-credential program?

Please visit mohawkcollege.ca for more information.
